When I first tell people that I'm a wedding planner one of the most common questions I get asked is, "What does a wedding actually cost nowadays?" This a complicated question to answer as a budget depends on many aspects. Things like venue location, guest count, priorities, and the level of customization all matter, so it can be really hard to give an exact budget. According to Zola, the nationwide average cost of a wedding is $36,000. In the Northern Virginia area the typical cost is between $50,000-$75,000 and the more extravagant ones are even more expensive. To determine and stick to your budget requires a lot of research and probably a few tears. Here I'm going to tell you what will make up your budget, and how to determine how much you will want your dream wedding to cost in 2026.

Wedding Planners or Coordinators

If you're wanting a full-service wedding planner you will have to pay more than if you're only looking for a coordinator. For wedding planner prices I'll go off of what our company prices, but obviously different wedding planners will price differently. For our company our full service coordination starts at $5200, but can go up depending on your budget and needs. This can be a big part of your budget, but booking a full service planner could save you money in other areas. They can negotiate contracts, get you discounts that they may have with preferred vendors, they have the experience to know where to save on cost, and will save you time, and time is money. Venue and Catering

Your venue and catering will take up about 50% of your total budget, so what venue you choose can make a big difference on what your budget will have to be. When looking at venues try to consider being flexible with the date of your wedding, as venues will normally give discounts if your date is not on a Saturday or is off-season. If you want your wedding to be on a Saturday, at a specific venue, and in-season you will need to definitely plan for that in your budget.

Catering will have one of the biggest effects on your budget. I've seen catering companies quote up to $400-500 per person which really adds up, and that may not even be including drinks! For catering, how big or small your guest list is will really determine how much you will be spending. Though most catering companies will have a minimum, having a smaller wedding will definitely help cut costs. Make sure you do a tasting before your wedding as cheaper does not always mean better.

Florals and Decor

Florals and decor will also be a huge part of your budget. Many florists have minimums so this is important to ask when looking for florists. If you want something simple you may have to pay your florist more because of their minimum, so think about what you will want for florals before searching. Zola states that the average cost of wedding flowers is $5100-$7600 or about 13% of your wedding budget and can go up from there. Plus once you add in all the other decor such as drapery, lights, candles, signage, and other little things this cost goes up significantly. I've recently seen a lot of people DIYing their flowers because of the cost and I think that can be a great option if you're going for something simpler and cheaper. If you're looking for complicated floral arrangements or want a large amount of flowers, a florist would definitely be needed.

Photography and Videography

Photography and videography can cost $8,000 and up for experienced photographers and videographers. This can seem like a lot but what I like to tell my couples is that the photos and videos are the only thing you will have forever. Those will be the photos hanging in your house and the video your future kids will watch. Therefore, this is an important aspect of your wedding day. There are photographers and videographers that will market their services cheaper, but what you sacrifice on price you will sacrifice on quality. The style of photography you want will also impact the price. Whether you want rolls of film, editorial, documentary, or others can make the photographer's price change. Certain photographers will have videographers they often work with and can add them in to their package which can be helpful with keeping the price down. Meet with several, look at their portfolios, and see if they'll customize packages to help you get the best quality for the best price, but know this will still end up being a big part of your budget.

Other Vendors

Even after all these vendors you'll still have quite a few more. Hair and makeup artists can cost about $150-$300 per person for their services. While djs can cost around $1500-$3000, a live band can cost anywhere from $3500 and up depending on the area, the number of musicians, and how long you want them to play. Then you still have transportation, printing of invitations and save-the-dates, the bride and groom's wedding bands, any guest experiences you want such as a photobooth or games, any other entertainment such as a live singer or even dancers, the wedding dress and accessories, groom's accessories, the officiant, the rehearsal dinner, and even more! That all starts to add up fast. With these other vendors costs can all vary depending on the level of experience you want to provide to your guests.

Tips

A lot of people forget that it is customary to tip your vendors, and so tips can be forgotten when planning your budget. You could end up spending close to $1000 in tips alone, so definitely make sure you take that into consideration. Also make sure you read contracts thoroughly as some contracts have gratuity included, so that will help you avoid double-tipping.

So How Much Does This All Cost Then?

I know you're thinking, "So what is the answer to how much I'm going to pay for a wedding?" Unfortunately, I can't give you a specific answer. What I can give you is some tips on how to figure it out. First decide on your guest count and what vendors or experiences are important to you for your wedding. Maybe you want amazing photography, but are willing to DIY your flowers. Or your best friend is amazing at hair and makeup so you won't need to hire hair and makeup artists, but you want a designer dress. Once you make these decisions you can then do more specific research for what you want and how much everything will cost you. Also do the most important part and look at your finances. See how much you can afford and compare that with the cost of what you want. From there you can then create your budget and see what your wedding should end up costing you.
